Fixing Active Shield Errors
Instantly repair registry conflicts with RegSweep!
What Are Activeshield Errors?
ActiveShield errors commonly occur when you first start your computer. ActiveShield is a major component of various McAfee security products and is responsible for providing you and your computer with ongoing protection against viruses, spyware, and more.
However, problems occur for various reasons, the exact reason can only be determined by knowing the error message itself, the version installed, and operating system.
"Some components of Active Shield are either missing or might not have been installed properly..."
This message most commonly occurs if you have McAfee VirusScan 8 or Virus Scan 9 installed on your computer. Problems occur for computers that have Windows 98 or later installed. Typically, this error message is received when an Active Shield file or component becomes corrupt or is missing. McAfee themselves recommend three techniques for the removal of this error and the proper functioning of Active Shield and your antivirus protection.

Remove Antivirus Applications
Try removing any other antivirus applications that you may have installed. This should be done through the Windows add/remove programs function. Located in the Control Panel, clicking on the add/remove programs button will display a window with a list of all programs currently installed on your computer. Uninstall any antivirus program that is not a McAfee program.
Reinstall McAfee
If this doesn't work then you should uninstall the program using the same method. Once un-installation is complete, reboot your PC and reinstall McAfee. If any files had been corrupted then reinstalling either directly from the McAfee site or from your McAfee program disk should solve the problem.
Check For Viruses
If neither of these work then your computer may be infected with a virus. Run a free online virus scan to see if this is the case. If you do have a virus then you should manually remove the virus before attempting the steps above.
"An error occurred while initializing Active Shield".
The most common cause for this error is that you have too many applications open or running. Close down other applications, stop processes that are running in the background and try restarting Active Shield. If that doesn't help then try the following:
Click "Start" and then select "Run"
Type "command" in the prompt screen and press "Enter" or click "OK"
Type "CD\" and press "Enter"
Type "EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT" and press "Enter"
Check to make sure the following lines appear in the blue window:
Set tmp=c:\temp
Set temp=c:\temp
If they don't appear then add them to blank lines. If they appear but slightly differently then modify the entries to match the above.
Hold the "Alt" key and press "F"
Press "X" to exit
On the "Save File" confirmation screen, press "Y" to save. You should return to the command prompt screen once again
Type "MD TEMP" and press "Enter"
Type "EXIT" and press "Enter"
Restart your computer and reinstall the VirusScan software
Using Third Party Software To Cure Activeshield Errors
If none of these methods work, or if you would rather avoid the use of the command prompt screen and uninstalling software then you may want to consider the use of a third party software application. Because many of these types of errors occur from corrupt entries in the registry, RegSweep is an ideal solution.
Why Use RegSweep?
RegSweep features a free scan that you should take advantage of. You will probably be surprised at the number of errors and problems that RegSweep finds when it scans your computer. Each of these entries uses valuable disk space, making it the perfect cure for a machine that is low on available resources. RegSweep also detects and cures many different registry entry problems. This includes corrupt files and corrupt entries, a major cause of problems with Active Shield errors.
Why You Should Clean The Windows Registry
The Windows registry holds masses of information pertaining to every piece of software and virtually every action you take on your PC. When you install and uninstall files and even when you open, edit, or delete files entries become corrupt in different ways. These corruptions and invalid entries are a drain on your system resource, and these factors combined mean that your PC is unlikely to be running at optimum performance. This can result in a slow computer, failed attempts to open programs, fatal errors, and ActiveShield errors among others.
RegSweep can solve all of these problems and save hours of manual work that is in no way guaranteed to cure the problem. If you've tried the manual methods of resolution but with no success then RegSweep should be your next solution to try. Cleaning the computer's registry on a routine basis is a very good idea to ensure your computer survives an extended life relatively unscathed.
